You want to clean your home naturally and reduce the amount of potentially harmful chemicals you’re using. But then you get to the bathroom… And you wonder if there are really products out there that can clean as well as your go-to chemicals. After all, it is a pretty dirty place and we want it to be clean.

Can you really throw out the bleach and switch to all natural bathroom cleaners?

Yes, you can. I’m here to tell you that I’ve used both conventional bathroom cleaners and more natural options to clean my bathroom with the same end result: a sparkling clean and sanitary bathroom.

Keep reading if you want to find out how to clean your bathroom naturally and what the best natural bathroom cleaning products are.

Multipurpose cleaners

Products marketed for bathroom surfaces

Products marketed for toilet bowls

Products marketed for soap scum

Basic, multi purpose cleaners

Basic soap like Branch Basics

This may rub some people the wrong way, but I’m going to argue that you can use the same cleaner you use around the rest of your house in the bathroom, from counter to toilet. I’ll concede that shower soap scum can be more difficult but even that is possible with routine cleaning.

Say we put soap scum aside, you can clean your floors, counters, toilets inside and out, trash cans and other surfaces with a basic soap spray. There are a lot of specially marketed products for various parts of the bathroom, but at the end of the day, for the most part, soap is soap. You don’t need something different to clean the toilet than you clean the counter with. Soap will get a toilet clean.

If you’re on board for this kind of cleaning line-up or at least for using basic sprays for 90% of your bathroom, check out my post on two natural cleaning recipes for a castile soap and a vinegar spray that could both work for this purpose. Either of these could work great. The vinegar spray is a great option if you’re interested in more disinfecting.

If you prefer to purchase a ready-to-go cleaning spray, look at a natural, gentle option like Branch Basics. This spray is just your good all-purpose soap spray and it works perfectly for just about everything. The way they set up their “bathroom spray” is that they just increase the ratio of soap to water, which makes it a little “stronger.” I’m not sure this is really necessary but it’s how they do it.

For toilets, I’d consider just squirting the concentrate right in the toilet bowl and scrubbing that in. It works wonderfully so long as you aren’t waiting a very long time between cleans.

I’ll add that mixing this with your dish soap on the shower glass will tackle the soap scum like a champ (as long as it’s not… like… years of buildup…)

Force of Nature

For another great option for total bathroom cleaning that may satisfy those who feel like they really need to sanitize their bathroom, try Force of Nature. Force of Nature is kind of like a gentler bleach that is much easier on the system and much safer. However, it is just as effective as bleach at disinfection and is an EPA certified disinfectant. Check out this post if you want to know more about Force of Nature and the science behind it.

Products marketed for bathroom surfaces

I get wanting a product marketed specifically for the bathroom. I stand by the fact that it’s not necessary, but I get it. If you are in the camp of wanting a bathroom-specific product, these Attitude bathroom cleaners are a great option. I haven’t tried them personally, but I have used other Attitude products and they are a very reputable company with effective products that are very clean. In fact, they’re EWG certified, which is great to see.

Attitude Bathroom Cleaner

This is going to be your general all-purpose spray that should work for just about everything and is designed for the bathroom. They also sell refills for this cleaner, which I always love.

Truly Free bathroom cleaner

Truly Free is a great company for cleaning products. They do have a bathroom specific cleaner, which is very effective. They also have a bathroom bundle you can purchase that includes the bathroom spray, hand soap, and room freshener.

Products marketed for toilet bowls

Again, you really can just take some soap, like Branch Basics concentrate, and squirt/spray it in there and give it a good scrub. But if you’re looking for a specific product…

Molly Suds Toilet Bowl Cleaner

This Molly Suds toilet bowl cleaner does have a fragrance but Molly Suds says it is plant derived and completely natural, so it should be perfectly safe.

Blueland Toilet Bowl Cleaning Tablets

This option from Blue Land is probably the least “natural” of all of the options I’ve presented but is still a clean and safe option. It also smells amazing… But it’s a naturally derived fragrance as opposed to a lot of bathroom cleaners!

Products marketed for soap scum

Again, a little dish soap mixed with pretty much any basic, natural cleaner and some scrubbing action should do the trick to get soap scum off. But if you prefer a specific cleaner…

Attitude Daily Shower and Tile Cleaner

This shower cleaner from Attitude should efficiently tackle your soap scum issues. Obviously, it’s always best if you keep up with it regularly. If you find the buildup has gotten out of hand, try the trick of mixing dish soap with this spray and it should work really well.

This is not going to work like CLR or Scrubbing Bubbles. Those are filled with chemicals designed to be very effective at tackling soap scum. They do their job. They’re also full of nasty chemicals… Point being, if you want to go a more natural route, you’ll probably have to put a little more elbow grease in. It shouldn’t be that difficult though.

I don’t know the state of your shower though…

I hope this helps you find some great products to tackle your bathroom cleaning naturally! It is easy to feel like you need to use traditional chemical cleaners to tackle your bathroom, but it just isn’t true. More natural products are safer but also effective. If you’re interested in switching to cleaning your bathroom naturally, I hope these products give you a place to start.
