Everyone knows the key to a beautiful, healthy face is skin care. Makeup can help you feel confident and highlight areas you love while evening out areas of concern. But a solid skin care routine is going to provide the foundation for that makeup to act on.

Personally, I love skin care and prioritize it over makeup. As I’ve said in the past though, I don’t have very problematic skin (in my opinion, I’m sure an esthetician may have other thoughts). Skin care is one of those things that’s so personal and everyone has to put in the time to figure out what works best for their skin.

In my skin care, I prioritize clean ingredients and minimizing chemical additives, especially ones that have been shown to have some health or irritant concerns. I’m not a hippie purist when it comes to my skin care, but I do keep it on the “natural” end of the spectrum.

Today I’m going to dive into a line up of the best clean and non-toxic skin care products for 2025. Some of these I’ve tried and others I have scoured the internet for information, picture evidence, and reviews on. I’m going to include a few categories for each type of product across the board to hopefully provide a few recommendations that will work for everyone.

Though these options range from very crunchy to clean but made for normal people, they are all clean and non-toxic. If you are committed to only using coconut oil, you may disagree and this post isn’t for you. I have looked at the ingredients for all of these products and determined that, based on current research and erring on the cautious side, these products are safe, non-toxic, and effective. Every product is fragrance free.

“The hippie” combines products that are marked at least an A on EWG Skin Deep rankings or has the most minimal and natural ingredients I could find. This category takes it a step past being “clean” products, but also minimizes the number of safe synthetic ingredients to be as natural as possible. “The budget” and “the splurge” are anything marked at least a B by EWG and I looked at the ingredients with my personal lens and perspective on safe ingredients based on my independent research. (I tend to use Skin Deep as a guide but don’t completely observe their rankings, based on my own knowledge of ingredients) Obviously one will be more affordable and the other not so much.

Also obviously, this post is basic. I am offering a lineup of basic skin care products for the average skin (though a lot of the products should work on all sorts of skin types). I don’t have the space here to get into individual skin concerns. There are also many great products for each of these areas, but I only chose a couple for this post.

Here’s some jump links if you’re interested in specific product categories.

Cleanser

Toner

Serums

Moisturizer

SPF

Masks

Exfoliants

Under eye

Lips

Cleanser

The hippie

ISOI Bulgarian Rose Intensive Cleansing Oil

This cleansing oil has very minimal ingredients and contains several ingredients to soothe the skin. Oil cleansing isn’t for everyone, but a lot of people that try it end up loving it. If you’re looking for a very natural and effective facial cleansing product, this is a great option.

(Another option that’s more affordable but still prioritizes minimal ingredients is Attitude Oceanly Face Cleanser Stick)

The budget

La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser

This is the face wash I’ve used for a couple years now and I love it. It’s nothing crazy fancy but it washes effectively and doesn’t dry your skin out excessively like I find some cleansers to do. Honestly, La Roche Posay is a generally solid brand in terms of clean skin care products, especially their cleansers. You can’t really go wrong with any of their cleansers if you’re looking for a highly affordable, clean, and effective product.

The splurge

True Botanicals CALM Ginger Turmeric Cleansing Balm

I absolutely love True Botanicals products. They tend to run more expensive, especially for things like serums. This cleansing balm is definitely more expensive than others but still not insanely priced.

Toner

The hippie

Toups & Co. Facial Toner

I love Toups & Co. products in general, as you will see. They have several toners for various concerns. I’ve used the brightening one and it worked great for me.

The budget

Cocokind Rosewater Facial Toner

This is such a nice toner with a lovely smell and is super affordable. Rose is great for your face so this is a great toning option.

The splurge

Marie Veronique Balancing Hypotonic

Not crazy pricey but definitely more expensive than a lot of others out there. But this is a solid toner option that’s super effective and balancing.

Serums

There are so many types of serums out there for various purposes. I am just going to offer one decent serum for each product so we don’t go down a rabbit hole here that could be it’s whole own post.

The hippie

Primally Pure Fancy Face Serum

This serum is totally natural and I personally love Primally Pure products because of their commitment to the cleanest ingredients and their efficacy.

(Another favorite of mine is this Toups & Co. Reparative Serum)

The budget

There are two main options I’d like to present here: Mad Hippie and The Ordinary. Both are super clean and very affordable. They also work very well from what I can tell and I’ve used several of each. I’m linking one from each brand here but they each have multiple for different concerns.

The splurge

True Botanicals Pure Radiance Face Serum

I’m going to be honest, I can’t afford this one on my current budget. But one year I splurged on this as a Christmas present to myself and oh goodness. I love it. It is so incredibly moisturizing and so clean! It’s probably one of my favorite skin care products ever.

(For a splurge but like… not that much of a splurge, check out this OSEA Hyaluronic Acid Sea Serum)

Moisturizer

The hippie

Toups & Co. Tallow Balm

Tallow balm is an incredibly simple product that is as natural as it can get and is so good for your skin. Especially in the dryer months, this keeps my skin feeling hydrated and glowy. This is definitely my go-to moisturizer for any time of year though. I talked about the benefits of tallow a little bit in my review of Sky & Sol Sunscreen if you want to read more about it.

The budget

Cocokind Texture Smoothing Cream

This lightweight cream is super hydrating, has very clean ingredients and is also super accessible. A lot of Targets carry this one! It may be lower in price, but that doesn’t mean low quality. It’s a popular product for a reason.

The splurge

OSEA Advanced Protection Cream

This is a luxury quality cream that is super hydrating and nourishing but definitely at a splurge price point.

(The True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil mentioned above is also a great option for moisturizer. You don’t necessarily need to put anything on top of that, though you certainly can.)

SPF

There are several tinted moisturizer products I love for my daily sunscreen but I chose not to include those here. These are just facial sunscreen products, no tint. Though I typically use tinted moisturizers for my daily protection, I am a Texas girlie and like to do an extra layer of these straight up sunscreens when going out into the sun in summer. (If you want to see my favorite tinted moisturizers, check out this post.)

I’ll also clarify that these are all mineral sunscreen options, not chemical sunscreen. I’ll get more into the debate on that someday, but for now, I kept it this way because that’s how a lot of people define clean sunscreen.

The hippie

Sky and Sol Face and Body Sunscreen

This isn’t the cheapest but I love it because it’s tallow-based, and I love tallow for skincare. I feel really good about putting this on my face because sometimes with other sunscreens I just feel like I’m adding something strange on top of everything. With this I know I’m simply moisturizing and providing sun protection at the same time. You can also use my code FAMILEE for 20% off.

(The Toups & Co. Sun Balm is a similar and great option.)

The budget

Kinship Self Reflect Moisturizing Sunscreen

This product is simple, clean, and effective. This is a great addition for a boost of SPF to your routine at a very affordable price.

The splurge

Le Prunier Plumscreen SPF31

This is pricey but so nourishing for your skin at the same time it provides protection from the skin. If you’re looking for a sunscreen that’s also going to add to your skin glow in other ways, this is a great option.

Masks

These are hydrating masks and I avoided including any that simultaneously exfoliate since I provided an exfoliator section below.

The hippie

New Zealand Honey Co. Raw Manuka Honey

This is as hippie as it gets. It’s literally just honey. Any old raw honey is great for your skin, but Manuka honey has more antioxidants in it, which helps fight acne and skin issues. Some brands are higher quality than others, I’ve linked a great one here.

The budget

Evolve Organic Beauty Natural Bio-Retinol Gold Face Mask

I love a good retinol mask and this is a great, very clean option that is super affordable! Plus, it’s gold… which is just fun.

The splurge

Kypris Cerulean Intense Soothing Hydration Mask

Boy oh boy if this isn’t the most expensive product I’ve ever seen. I haven’t tried this but it’s supposed to be divine and a major problem skin solution. It better be at that price point! If you’ve got the cash and you’re looking for a miracle solution for problem skin, this may be something to try!

(For a much more reasonable but slight splurge, try this Biossance Squalane and Ectoin Overnight Rescue)

Exfoliants

The hippie

Youth to the People Resurfacing Facial

This is so, so clean and people SWEAR by it. I haven’t tried this one but it’s next on my list of skin care to try.

The budget

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting Exfoliant

Paula’s Choice is popular because it works so well. A lot of their products are actually super clean, too, including this BHA and salicylic acid exfoliant.

The splurge

Goop Beauty GOOPGLOW Beauty Microderm Face Exfoliator

This stuff is EXPENSIVE but people love it. The ingredients are clean and this will help slough off the old layers of skin to reveal beautiful healthy skin. If you have the splurge money, I say go for it.

Under eye

The hippie

100% Pure Bright Eyes Masks

These eye masks are wonderful and affordable with very minimal ingredients. Those looking for an under eye product with ingredients they can understand need look no further.

The budget

DIME Beauty Luminosity Eye Serum

This could easily go in “the hippie” section as it’s EWG verified and super clean, but it isn’t as natural as the 100% pure product listed. This product is super popular for good reason though. You can be sure this will lighten up your under eyes without relying on harsh chemicals.

The splurge

OSEA Ocean Eyes Age Defying Eye Serum

OSEA seems to be a recurring brand here, yeah? They’re great and their eye cream is no exception. Slightly pricer but the reviews speak for themselves.

Lips

The hippie

Toups & Co. Tallow Lip Balm

This is a great, simple chapstick that is super hydrating and carries my poor dry lips through the winter. It’s as clean as clean can get and affordable as it lasts a while.

The budget

Alpyn Willow and Sweet Agave Lip Plumping Mask

I would think anything plumping would not be clean but the ingredients in this product are great. This is a great lip moisturizing “mask” type product that will also add a little oomph to your lips and is super affordable.

(If you don’t want any lip plumping, try this ILIA Lip Wrap Reviving Balm instead.)

The splurge

Henne Organics Lip Mask

This lip mask could easily go in “the hippie” section because it’s basically just a bunch of oils. I haven’t tried it yet but it might have to be next in line to replace my current lip mask. People say it’s a God send for their dry lips over winter.

That’s it. A product for every step of your clean skin care routine. I hope you found a product that will help you reduce the toxins in your skin care while maintaining (and maybe improving!) the healthy skin that’s so important for confidence!
